Ausbury, Chargers Wrap Up Spring Break Trip With 4-1 Victory

The Carl Sandburg College baseball team ended its Spring Break trip on a high note Wednesday, holding Danville (Va.) to just three hits in a 4-1 victory. The Chargers (5-3) closed their five-day trip with three straight wins and a 4-2 record.

After Tyler Womack (Moline, Ill./Moline) drew a bases-loaded walk in the third to bring in the game’s first run, Cacey O’Brien (Moline, Ill./Moline) followed with a two-run single to center — one of just four Chargers hits on the day — for a 3-0 lead. 

Sandburg Star of the Game
Starter Travis Ausbury (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) earned his first career victory by working four hitless innings. The sophomore right-hander struck out two and walked two, retiring 11 of his last 13 batters.

Nolan Struhs (Avon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) followed Ausbury with two innings of relief work, and Mitch Smith (Moline, Ill./Sherrard) struck out two in a scoreless seventh to earn the save. Chargers pitchers gave up just two runs on 11 hits over 20 innings in the final three games of the team’s trip.
